Depression

What is Depression?

We all feel down sometimes when things go badly, and we often hear people say that they feel depressed, but Depression is much more than just an off day.

If you suffer with Depression, then your off-day can last a lifetime. Every day the world seems bleak, and shutting out the world seems like the best option. Talking with friends and family rarely helps, and if it does it only lasts a few days at best.

Depression is a feeling of sadness that lasts for more than just a few days, and most importantly it interferes with your life.

It is the fastest growing mental illness, and more people die as a result of depression than car accidents. It is serious, debilitating and deadly.

Symptoms of Depression

The symptoms of Depression can sometimes seem a bit vague, which is why it often gets missed, in addition not everyone gets all of the symptoms, and some of the signs appear to be unrelated, or confusing (especially the one about weight loss, or is it weight gain?).

Typical depression symptoms include:

  • Feel unhappy most of the time, maybe better in the evening
  • Lose interest or lack of enjoyment (hobbies, work, sex etc)
  • Unable to make decisions
  • Feeling unable to cope
  • Tiredness
  • Poor sleep pattern (hard to sleep and up early)
  • Restlesness
  • Weight Loss (or weight gain)
  • Lack of self confidence
  • Feeling of uselessness or hopelessness
  • Wanting to be alone/avoidance
  • Irritability, anger, frustration
  • SUICIDAL THINKING

Depression itself can be a symptom of something else too. Bullying, long term illness and job-loss can all lead to a depressive state, in these cases the risks associated with Depression can be overlooked.

Typical Treatment Plan

Depression is notoriously difficult to treat and resolution is often time consuming. Unfortunately most medical authorities do not have the resources to deal with a long term recovery plan so much of the effort goes into managing the symptoms rather than solving the problem. We believe that depression can be 'cured' and that with the right methods the symptoms of depression can be removed rather than just managed.

Typical treatment program includes:

  • Psychotherapy - Perhaps the most common of the talking therapies and for depression one of the most effective. By following a structured series of psychotherapy sessions the root cause of the depression can be identified and resolved. This leads to a rapid improvement of symptoms and often the dissipation of the depression.
  • EMDR - Many suffering from Depression have an initial trigger point to their history and EMDR can be an effective way of dealing with the traumatic incident. Using EMDR it is possible to uncover many of the 'lost' memories that individuals have, and using the other methods available we can reprocess them to improve and remove the depression.
  • Hypnosis - This is an excellent tool for getting to the root of an issue, and to create new and productive approaches to support recovery. This is particularly helpful when dealing with the behaviours and beliefs surrounding earlier childhood events, and can be used to improve sleep patterns in clients.
  • NLP/TimeLine Therapy -This is a useful approach for building positive future outlooks and thus to show endpoint and startpoint of the depression.
Due to the nature of Depression, and the risks involved it may be necessary to discuss any treatment plan with your doctor prior to seeking treatment.
