PTSD

What is PTSD?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD is a mental disorder which has been caused by some event which a person considers life threatening or highly dangerous. It is a common condition amongst rescue workers and military personnel, although it can affect anyone who is involved in a life threatening incident such as a car accident.

There are 2 types of PTSD. Type 1, and the one that most people consider to be PTSD related to a single, high stress incident, or a number of closely related (in time) incidents. Type 2, which often goes undiagnosed arises through the impact of numerous small threatening events over an extended period, even many years.

Symptoms of PTSD

The symptoms of PTSD often appear as other disorders, and this can lead to mis-diagnosis and treatment. Typically an individual who has PTSD will suffer from some form of depressed state, agitation or fear related to the incident and flash-back/recurrent thoughts regarding the incident.

Typical symptoms may include some or all of the following:

 RelivingAvoidance
Arousal

 Nightmares
Flashbacks
Intrusive Memories
Stress response when reminded

Loss of interest
Memory Loss of Event
Detachment
'No Future'

Difficulty Sleeping
Angry Outbursts
Poor Concentration
'Red Alert'

Typical Treatment Plan

PTSD responds well to a number of therapeutic approaches, and the three main methods that I use are:

  • CBT -  Carefully and gradually “exposing” the you to the thoughts, feelings, and situations that remind you of the trauma. Therapy also involves identifying upsetting thoughts about the traumatic event–particularly thoughts that are unhelpful and replacing them with more positive ones.
  • EMDR - This is useful for unfreezing and reprocessing the memories surrounding the traumatic events. This frees up your mind to fully manage what happened to you and relieve many of the emotional frustrations.
  • Family Psychotherapy - PTSD affects everyone close to you and family psychotherapy can help those close to you understand what you are going through. Involving everyone in your recovery is both helpful and intrinsic in dealing with PTSD.
