You know if someone is nervous when they talk to you about a subject, and even if they are the most knowledgeable person in their field, if they don't project confidence then you will always doubt what they are saying.

If you want to be successful with hypnosis then you should understand the fact that tying an hypnotic suggestion to an emotion is much more powerful, and therefor much more effective than tying it to a fact.

One YES can counteract a thousand No's!

What do politicians and car salesmen have in common? No, it isn't a joke but something that is very applicable to hypnosis. The answer is that they both ask questions where the only answer is Yes. The better the politician or salesman, the better the questions, but always with a yes answer.

Have you ever tried to tell a 5 year old what to do? What was the result? The usual response is a resounding NO! Even today, if someone tells you to do something your first (internal) reaction is to say £^$% You, although probably in a much more polite way.

What about when you tell yourself that you MUST do something...hmm...do you procratinate by any chance...put things off until later. Yep, even the enlightened soul that you are, when you tell yourself to do something it is highly unlikely to succeed.

Attendees of presentation courses are often told:

  • Tell the audience what you're going to tell them
  • Tell them
  • Tell them what you just told them

This is one of the most common forms of hypnotic suggestion and is based upon the assumption that the subject will do something internally, this (hypnotist) verbalised assumption makes it true in the mind of the subject.

To really be effective with hypnosis you need to build some form of relationship with the subject.

Often the stronger the relationship the easier the hypnosis (although there are a lot of other factors involved as well) and in hypnotherapy the relationship bond is actually very important because of the subject matter.

These are those statements that are so obviously true that they can't be argued with. A very simple example is 'You already know how to close your eyes and become so relaxed that you fall asleep', because it is so obviously true, since you do this every night when you go to sleep.

This kind of suggestion allows the subject to accept a suggestion without them having to conciously take action. Common application in the form of "You don't have to...' are seen regularly, especially outside of pure hypnosis.

A suggestion that covers all types of response is useful when you want a subject to go in a particular direction. This works as a suggestion because it 'proves' that someone is hypnotised because one of the statements has to be true, and therefore the subject must be hypnotised.

Depending on who you listen to and what you read the history of NLP can be very varied, and often contradictory. Here is my take on the history of the subject having been through numerous training courses and having heard all of the stories.

This presupposition is usually stated as:

People do the best they can with the knowledge they have. When people know better they do better.

The presuppositions sound like a support band from the early 60's but is in fact one of the pieces of NLP jargon that is peppered throughout the subject and hides much of the simplicity behind NLP.

Simply put the presuppositions are those things that you need to believe before you can make effective use of the NLP tools and techniques. You don't have to believe them but you will find it a lot easier if you do.

Class: Non-Action, Implication
Description: The assumption is that you will do it, this is the body of the suggestion, the No-Action top and tail the suggestion to reinforce the implication.

Examples:
Don't become relaxed too quickly.
Don't decide to become slim too quickly.
Don't
close your eyes too quickly.
