Weight and Genetics

There has been a great deal of press coverage regarding the genetic cause for obesity or the 'fat gene' and yet there is still no evidence that there is such a thing, and even if there is, would it really explain the leap in obesity over the past 30 years?

Categories of Stress

There are a number of generally accepted categories of stress including Acute Stress which is the most common form of stress, and what most people think of as stress. We all know people with Episodic Acute Stress, these are the 'headless chickens' who seem to run from crisis to crisis. Then there is Chronic Stress, or long term stress, this is the stress that often leads to depression, substance abuse and possibly even suicide.

Each type of stress has its own unique symptoms and a best appoach to dealing with them.

Class: Question
Description: This simple addition to any statement immediately turns it into a question and is a modifier rather than a suggestion in itself.

Class: Implication, Cause-and-effect
Description: The use of the You May statement at the beginning of the suggestion is a weak implied statement that something has happened, the bulk of the suggestive power comes from the cause and effect part of the statement. The thing to notice about this statement is the effect preceeds the cause in the statement, although in the mind of the subject there will be a cause --> effect linkage.

Example:You may notice the numbness throughout your body as you relax.
You may notice you are less stressed as you become more aware of your body.
You may notice the answer to you problem is clearer as you focus on your own thoughts.

People can, you know, ...

Class: Truism, Implication
Description: The People Can component of the suggestion is turns the statement into a Truism for the subject, and is powerful in its own right, the addition of the You Know component increases the effectiveness by implying that the subject is already aware of the Truism statement and, more importantly, applies it to themselves. Truism and Implication combined ta make a general statement subject specific.

Example:
People can, you know, go deeply into a hypnotic trance state.
People can, you know, lose weight easily and completely.
People can, you know, find answers to their most difficult problems.

People are able to ...

Class: Truism
Description: This is a suggestion that creates in the mind of the subject a generalised reality, which the subject will take and apply to themselves. There are no specific People mentioned in the statement, and even if it is only true for a small number of people it is still true and therefore may apply to the subject.

Example:People are able to relax whenever they need to.
People are able to lose weight and get fit.
People are able to look inside and find the answers to your problem.

Class: Negation
Description: A typical negation statement that is designed to overcome some of the simpler forms of resistance. This is a confirmation through negation, with the theory being that the mind cannot easily manage negative statements.

Examples:You can relax completely, can you not?
You can imagine how you will look when you are fit and healthy, can you not?
You can focus on the best outcome for you, can you not?

How quickly can you...?

Class: Question, Implication
Description: The question implies that there is no doubt that the subject is capable of undertaking the suggestion the main issue is the speed at which the suggestion done. This question also works as a enticement by asking just how quick (and therefore just how capable) the subject is, and since no-one wants to be thought of as less than competent the suggestion has extra power.

Examples:
How quickly can you begin to eat healthily?
How quickly can you become totally and deeply relaxed?
How quickly can you see the benefits of making the changes that you want to?

The How and Why of Hypnosis

Hypnosis has been used for hundreds of years, and yet there is still a great deal of confusion, mysticism and misinformation around the subject. This article will (hopefully) explain what hypnosis really is, why it works and how effective it is.

So, What IS Hypnosis?
